Sustainable Garden Design

At Hicks & Hart, we employ sustainability principles wherever possible, in consultation with the needs and preferences of our clients. We take our lead from the RHS Sustainability Strategy, which aims to inspire the UK’s 30m gardeners to be net positive for nature. We also consult experts in the field of sustainability more generally.

Sustainable garden design can include using more drought resistant plants to help withstand extreme weather conditions; reusing or reducing hard landscaping materials to reduce the carbon impact of transportation; planting to encourage biodiversity and pollinators; and avoiding plastics, among other measures.

Recent sustainability case study

In 2023, Hicks & Hart designed a one-acre garden aiming to employ as many of the principles of the RHS Sustainability Strategy as possible. The garden comprises a number of outdoor ‘rooms’ which can also inspire work in smaller gardens.
